Garden Sheds and Kennels

Kefken Ahşap Dekorasyon makes small timber structures for the garden: dog kennels, storage and tool sheds, playhouses for children, outdoor shower and changing cabins, and birdhouses. We prepare the parts to measure in our own workshop, then take them to the site and put them together. Small kennels can also be finished in the workshop and delivered in one piece.

What work falls under this heading?

• Dog kennel: A raised floor, a pitched roof and an entrance sized to the dog. The outside can be clad in horizontal boards and the roof covered with shingles; a small porch can be added at the front.
• Garden shed and store: Sheds with single or double doors for garden tools, bicycles or firewood. Shelves and hooks inside are made to suit what you keep.
• Playhouse: A small house with a door and window; a swing can be added beside it.
• Shower and changing cabin: Outdoor shower cabins, changing cabins and timber duckboard floors for the pool or the waterside.
• Birdhouse: Small nest boxes hung in the garden or on a tree.

How is a shed or kennel made?

1. Size and spot: We talk about where it will stand, the ground and what will go inside. For a kennel, the size of the dog sets the dimensions.
2. Quote: We settle the size, the roof covering, the number of doors and windows and the colour, and prepare a quote.
3. Workshop fabrication: The floor, wall panels and roof are prepared in the workshop.
4. Delivery and assembly: Larger sheds are taken in parts and assembled on site. Finally a protective coat is applied.

What timber is used, and how is it protected?

Pressure-treated pine is generally used outdoors. The preservative is pressed into the wood and makes it more resistant to rot; the surface still needs varnish, oil or paint. Raising the floor off the ground stops the timber drawing moisture from the soil. Shingles are a common roof covering; they keep the rain out and the inside dry. When the protective coat fades, a light sanding and a new coat are enough.

What matters in a dog kennel?

A kennel should be big enough for the dog to turn around and lie down comfortably, but no bigger; a small inner space warms up more easily in winter. The entrance faces away from the wind. The floor is raised, and the roof sheds water to the sides rather than over the doorway. The roof or a side panel can be made to open for easier cleaning. Inner surfaces are sanded, with no sharp edges for the dog to chew.
