Porches and Timber Roofs

Kefken Ahşap Dekorasyon builds timber porches, eaves and timber roofs for house entrances, terraces and gardens. We prepare the posts, beams and roof trusses to measure in our own workshop, and our own team installs them on site. Renewing the timber roof frame of an existing building also falls under this heading.

What work do porches and timber roofs cover?

This heading covers porch canopies over front doors and windows, eaves projecting from the facade, and covered timber structures over a parking space or a seating area. Timber roof frames made of trusses, beams and purlins, and tongue-and-groove panelling under the eaves, belong here too. A porch is fixed to the wall of the house and rests on a row of posts at the front. A timber roof is the load-bearing structure that covers the whole building.

What is the difference between a porch and a pergola?

A pergola usually has an open or partly open top; the shade comes from plants, an awning or a clear cover. A porch has a closed top and keeps the rain off. Timber boarding goes over the beams, and a roof covering such as shingles or tiles goes over the boarding. How does a porch or timber roof job work?

1. Site visit: We see the site and check the wall the porch will attach to, the ground and the direction the water will run.
2. Measurement and quote: We take measurements, settle the post and beam sizes, the roof covering and the colour, and prepare a quote.
3. Workshop fabrication: Posts, beams and trusses are cut in the workshop and the joints are prepared.
4. Installation: The structure is put up, then the timber boarding and the roof covering go on. Finally a protective coat is applied.

What timber and finish are used?

Pressure-treated pine is generally used outdoors for posts and beams. The preservative is pressed into the wood and makes it more resistant to rot, but it does not replace the paint or varnish on the surface. Glulam beams can also be used for wide spans. A porch can be varnished in a dark tone or painted. The colour is chosen to suit the facade and the window frames.

How do you maintain a porch?

Sun and rain wear a porch the most. The feet of the posts should stay clear of water, the roof should drain into the gutter, and the outer surface should stay covered by its protective coat. When the colour fades or the surface starts to flake, a light sanding and a new coat of varnish or paint is enough. Before a new coat goes on, the surface should be clean and dry.
