Timber fence along a garden boundary

We built a timber fence of upright pickets along a garden boundary. The pickets are fixed to horizontal rails at even spacing, and a small garden gate of the same pickets, with hinges and a bolt, is set into the fence. Outdoor timber turns grey in the sun over time; a protective oil or paint slows that change.
