Our work
Kefken Ahşap Dekorasyon builds timber stairs with their railings to measure for gardens, terraces, decks and building entrances. The same team measures the stairs, prepares them in the workshop and installs them on site.
Which stairs do you build?
Some of the work we have done:
- Straight stairs and stairs with landings between the garden and a terrace or deck
- Timber stairs leading down to the shore by the sea
- Curved timber stairs at building entrances
- White-painted outdoor stairs with storage underneath
- Timber railings for existing stone or concrete stairs
For railings we make cross-braced, vertical slatted and round-post models. Stairs often come as part of a deck, terrace or fence job; in that case we finish them all in the same timber and colour.
Which timber is used for outdoor stairs?
Pressure-treated pine is generally used outdoors. The preservative pressed into the wood makes it more resistant to rot and insects. Treads are the surface that wears and gets wet the most, so if the budget allows, a harder timber such as iroko can be chosen for them. Opaque paints such as white or oils that keep the natural tone can be applied.
How does a timber stair job work?
- Site visit: We see the height difference, where the stairs start and end, and the ground.
- Measurement and quote: We work out the number of steps, the riser height and the width, and quote with the railing model.
- Workshop fabrication: Stringers, treads and railing parts are cut in our workshop in Arnavutköy.
- Installation: The stairs are fixed to the ground and to the structure they connect to, the railing is fitted and the protective coat applied.
- Maintenance: After handover you can call us to renew the paint or oil.
On a comfortable stair, every riser is the same height. That is why we take the measurements on site, with care.
How do you maintain timber stairs?
On outdoor stairs the top of each tread is both worn by feet and hit directly by rain, so the protective coat wears thin there first. When the colour fades or the tread surface turns rough, a light sanding and a fresh coat are enough. In winter, moss and leaves can make the steps slippery; regular cleaning prevents this. Loose railing posts should be tightened straight away. We also repair stairs built by other companies.
Frequently asked questions
Can you add a timber railing to my existing stone stairs?
Yes. The posts are bolted to the stone or concrete steps and the railing is built on them. We choose the model and colour to match the other timber work around the house.
Can the space under the stairs be used?
Yes. We have closed the space under outdoor stairs as storage with doors on some jobs. We discuss it during the site visit, based on the size of the stairs.
Do timber outdoor stairs get slippery in winter?
Moss, leaves and ice make any outdoor stair slippery. Keeping the treads clean and the protective coat renewed reduces the risk.
Can I have the stairs built together with a deck and railing?
Yes, on most jobs we build the stairs together with a deck, terrace or fence. That way everything is in the same timber and colour and finished in one go.
What determines the price?
The number of steps, the width, whether there is a landing, the timber species and the railing model. We give an exact figure after the site visit and measurement.
