Our work
Kefken Ahşap Dekorasyon builds timber railings for terraces, decks and stairs, timber fences for garden boundaries, and garden gates to match. Fabrication is done in our workshop in Arnavutköy and installation by our own team.
Which kinds of railings and fences do you build?
Some of the work we do:
- Horizontal or vertical slatted railings along decks and terraces
- Timber-framed railings with wire mesh infill
- Timber fences and log railings on top of stone walls
- Pointed, white-painted or round-post garden fences
- Safety railings for children's play areas
- Single or double garden gates to match the fence
We work at different scales, from villas to residential complex gardens. The style, height and slat spacing are set by how the place is used. Where there are children or pets, narrow gaps are recommended.
Which timber is used for railings and fences?
Pressure-treated pine is generally used outdoors. The preservative pressed into the wood makes it more resistant to rot and insects outdoors. Where the deck is iroko or teak, we can make the railing from the same timber so the two match. For colour, oils that keep the natural tone or opaque paints such as white can be applied.
How are railings and fences installed?
- Site visit: We walk the line and check whether the base is soil, concrete or a stone wall.
- Measurement and quote: We measure the length, height and gate positions and quote with the model and colour.
- Workshop fabrication: Posts, handrails and slat panels are cut and prepared in the workshop.
- Installation: Depending on the base, posts are bolted to concrete, a stone wall or the deck joists, then the panels and gates are fitted.
- Maintenance: After handover you can call us for paint, oil and loose fixings.
The key point in a railing is a firmly fixed post. A railing that flexes when you lean on it is unsafe and wears out quickly.
How do you maintain a timber fence?
On fences and railings, water collects most at the foot of the posts and on top of the horizontal handrail. Keeping those spots dry and renewing the protective coat when the colour fades or flaking starts is enough. A single broken or rotten slat or post can be replaced without taking down the whole line. Checking and tightening the bolts now and then also stops the railing from wobbling. We also repair fences and railings built by other companies.
Frequently asked questions
Can a timber railing be built on an existing stone wall?
Yes. The posts are bolted to the stone wall and the timber fence or railing is built on them. We check the condition of the wall during the site visit.
What makes a railing safe for children?
Firmly fixed posts, narrow gaps between slats and no horizontal rails that are easy to climb.
Do you also make garden gates to match the fence?
Yes. We make single or double garden gates in the same timber and pattern as the fence. On wide gates the leaf can be reinforced with a metal frame.
What colour can a timber fence be?
Oils that keep the natural tone of the wood can be used, or white or another opaque colour. We choose the colour together during the site visit, looking at the facade of the house.
What determines the price?
The length of the line, the height, the model, the timber species, the base and the number of gates. We give an exact figure after the site visit and measurement.
Guides
- Railings: timber or metal?A timber railing gives a deck, timber terrace or garden staircase a warm, unified look. If the rest of the structure is timber, the match comes naturally. In return, a timber railing in the sun needs regular oil or paint. A metal railing blocks less of the view with its slim sections and usually needs less frequent care, but it heats up in the sun and has to be protected against rust. The choice usually comes down to where the railing goes, what the rest of the structure is made of and how much time you can give to maintenance. Mixed railings that combine both materials are also common.
- What is pressure-treated timber?Pressure-treated timber is wood that has had a preservative forced into it under vacuum and pressure. The treatment protects woods with low natural durability, such as pine, against rot, fungi and insects. Outdoors, pressure-treated pine is commonly used for deck substructures, fences, railings, pergolas and gazebos. Treatment protects the inside of the wood, not the surface against the sun. So pressure-treated timber also greys and checks over time, and its surface needs regular oil or paint.
