Our work
Kefken Ahşap Dekorasyon fabricates timber pergolas, gazebos and veranda canopies to measure for gardens and terraces and installs them on site. Beams and posts are prepared in our workshop in Arnavutköy, and our own team does the assembly.
What is the difference between a pergola and a gazebo?
A pergola is a beam structure resting on posts, with an open or partly open top. It is usually built against a terrace or the side of the house; climbing plants can grow over it, and a clear roof or an awning can be added. A gazebo stands on its own in the garden and has a closed roof over a seating area. It can be octagonal or rectangular, and its roof is timber boarding covered with a material such as shingles. Verandas and porch canopies sit between the two: they attach to the house and have a closed roof.
What timber and roof options are there?
Pressure-treated pine is generally used outdoors for posts and beams. The preservative pressed into the wood makes it more resistant to rot and insects. For the roof there are three routes:
- Open beams: Plants or an awning give the shade. This is the lightest solution.
- Clear roof: It keeps the rain off and lets the light in.
- Closed roof: Timber boarding covered with a material such as shingles. This is the most common choice for gazebos.
For colour, oils that keep the natural tone of the wood or opaque paints can be used. White-painted pergolas are among the jobs we have done.
How does a pergola or gazebo job work?
- Site visit: We see the site and check the sun direction, the ground and the wall the structure will attach to.
- Measurement and quote: We take measurements, settle the roof and colour, and prepare a quote.
- Workshop fabrication: Posts, beams and roof members are cut in the workshop and the joints are prepared.
- Installation: Posts are fixed to the ground, beams are joined with bolted connections, then the roof and protective coat go on.
- Maintenance: After handover you can call us to renew the paint or oil.
How do you maintain a timber pergola?
Pergolas and gazebos are exposed to sun and rain all year. The top beams get the most sun, so the protective coat wears thin there first. When the colour fades or the surface starts to flake, a light sanding and a fresh coat of oil or paint is enough. Keeping water from pooling at the foot of the posts and tightening the bolts now and then extends the life of the structure. We also maintain pergolas and gazebos built by other companies.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a pergola or a gazebo?
If you want light shade attached to your house, a pergola fits better; if you want a covered corner that stands alone in the garden and can be used in the rain, a gazebo does. We decide together once we have seen the space.
Can a pergola have a roof?
Yes. A clear roof keeps the rain off while letting light in, or the top can be fully closed with timber boarding and a covering such as shingles.
Can a pergola be fixed to the terrace wall?
Yes, pergolas are often built with one side attached to the facade. We check the load-bearing capacity of the wall during the site visit.
How often should a timber pergola be repainted?
It depends on how exposed it is to sun and rain. Fading or flaking means it is time; usually a light sanding and a fresh coat are enough.
What determines the price?
The size of the structure, the roof type, the timber species, the colour and the state of the ground. We give an exact figure after the site visit and measurement.
Guides
- What determines the price of a pergola?Four things drive the price of a timber pergola most: its size, the timber, the roof and the site. A larger area means more material and labour. Pressure-treated pine is the most economical option; hardwoods such as iroko cost more. Open rafters are the lightest solution; roof covering needs extra material and labour. The ground, the wall it fixes to, the colour and the details also change the price. Most of these factors only become clear once the site is seen and measured.
- Pergola or gazebo?A pergola is a shade structure on posts, usually topped with open beams or spaced slats; it is often fixed to the side of the house or a wall. A gazebo is a garden structure with a closed roof that usually stands on its own. An open pergola breaks the sun but does not keep the rain off; a gazebo can be used in the rain too. If you want a shaded seating area in front of the house, a pergola suits better; if you want a corner in the garden you can sit in when it rains, a gazebo does. Because a gazebo has a roof and often a floor, it needs more material and labour.
- What is pressure-treated timber?Pressure-treated timber is wood that has had a preservative forced into it under vacuum and pressure. The treatment protects woods with low natural durability, such as pine, against rot, fungi and insects. Outdoors, pressure-treated pine is commonly used for deck substructures, fences, railings, pergolas and gazebos. Treatment protects the inside of the wood, not the surface against the sun. So pressure-treated timber also greys and checks over time, and its surface needs regular oil or paint.
